I have heard several people ask questions about Foursquare like, ‘What is it?” or “Why do I care if a friend is at xyz coffee shop?
Here is a simple explanation of what it is and why small business owners should care about how it can benefit them.
.
Foursquare is a location-based social networking website and software for mobile devices. Users “check-in” at venues using a mobile website, text messaging or device specific application. They are then awarded points and sometimes “badges” as well as discounted incentives to go to a business.
  1. Location-based services using GPS has great business potential
  2. Learn more about customer demographics including first time visitors, gender, return customers, age, etc.
  3. Provides incentives bring new prospects in the door
  4. Rewards loyal customers
  5. Registered users can connect with other friends on the network, know where they have been. This provides huge potential for referrals.

According to Mashable, a recent McDonald’s Foursquare Day Campaign Increased Checkins by 33%. According to McDonald’s head of social media, Rick Wion tweeted that “the 33% increase was in the number of checkins. We consider checkins the same as a person entering the restaurant.”

Hey Kakie – Thanks for elaborating on FourSquare. I’ve been avoiding it and probably will continue for now since I am not in a specific location as a small business (and then there are those nasty security issues of having someone know where you are while pet sitting). But I like that you explained the benefits. I had no idea!
